Multipurpose group advocates Gladys Asmah as running mate

Takoradi, Aug. 12, GNA - A section of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) women's wing known as the Multipurpose Women's group have urged the party's Flag Bearer to select Mrs Gladys Asmah, Minister of Fisheries as his running mate in the upcoming general election. Speaking on behalf of the group at a press conference at Takoradi on Monday, Madam Kate Wilson said the vice presidential position is the second most important position in the country, there was the need therefore to select someone who possesses high qualities and could stand in for the latter in his absence.

She said that Mrs Asmah is the most experienced female politician in the country and therefore has all the qualities that could make her a President of Ghana.

Madam Wilson said Mrs Asmah has been one of the most trusted and reliable members of the NPP and as such should be selected as the running mate ahead of the December general elections. Enumerating some of Mrs Asmah's work, she said it included the training of several women in various trades and vocations, mobilization of micro-finance credit to support women in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.

Mrs Asmah, Madam Wilson said, was the brain behind the formation of the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs, because of her love and special interest in children and women, and also served as the first minister of that Ministry.

She said the position of the NPP vice president is not limited to where one comes from or the religion of that an individual belongs, but the most important criteria is that the person should be a Ghanaian. Madam Wilson said the choice of Mrs Asmah would inspire women and motivate many more to vote massively for the NPP. 12 Aug 08
