The former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, an aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearership ticket, has confirmed that it was her husband who asked her to contest President J.E.A. Mills to lead the party in the 2012.
On a secret tape scooped by ‘The Enquirer Intelligence’ during a meeting between Nana Konadu, her campaign team and delegates of the NDC at Ashaiman, which was held at Queens Hotel last Tuesday, Nana Konadu told the delegates that she took up the challenge based on calls on the founder to change Prof. Mills.
“Many people, including the youth, women and founding members, came to see founder that he should look for somebody to change Mills because a second term will spell a doom,” she said.
She said after a thorough search for somebody who is marketable in a short time, the former president said it is clear it is Konadu. Nana Konadu was captured on the tape telling the delegates that if she was given the opportunity to be the flagbearer, she would build the structures of the party. “I will make sure that the party structures which are the bedrock of this party become supreme and the executives will help propel us into a new generation,” she said. While Nana Konadu was speaking, the Member of Parliament for the constituency entered and that made Mr. Teye Nyaunu, Konadu’s loose cannon, to break protocol, as he shouted, “Here comes the Honorable Member of Parliament for Ashaiman.”
Nana Konadu also took the opportunity to welcome Mr. Alfred Agbesi, the MP, after which she continued with her presentation. She said that just like the delegates who were present, she is a diehard NDC and nobody could move her from the party. “Nobody can move me from the party…Others broke away from this party; others too can go, as for me I will not go…Menkobebiara,” she said. Attack On CPP
Nana Konadu turned her attention on the Convention People’s Party and told the delegates that the CPP would never win anything more than three percent of votes in any election.
“The CPP helped the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to destroy the CPP and now they want to help the NPP to destroy the NDC,” she said. She was captured on the tape as saying that the CPP will remain at their down position because it does not have the nation at heart. “We want to take our party to build the structures and move on,” she said.
Recap At the meeting with the delegates, Mr. Nyaunu was captured on the tape claiming that Nana Konadu has the backing of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II because Nana Konadu is a royal.
The Manhyia Palace has so far denied knowledge of any such assurance. Mr. Nyanu on the tape said that Asantehene told him and others that Ashanti will vote for Nana Konadu instead of voting for an Akyem (referring to Nana Akufo Addo).
Another voice, which was captured on the tape, was that of Mr. Kofi Adams, who was heard telling the delegates that the government was not protecting their own. He said that the NPP protected their supporters to the extent that they managed to release somebody from prison custody.
