NADMO told to focus on employment generation

Savelugu (N/R), Aug.18, GNA - Alhaji Mahamoud Alhassan, Northern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has urged officials of the organization to redirect their activities towards employment generation and wealth creation.

He explained that if people were engaged in profitable ventures they would desist from carrying out unfriendly environment activities, which could easily cause disasters.

Alhaji Alhassan said this at the inauguration of a 14 member District Disaster Management Committee for the Savelugu/Nanton District at Savelugu, on Wednesday.

On the committee are representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), the Department of Social Welfare, World Vision International and Action Aid Ghana with Mr Abubakari Atori, District Chief Executive, as the Chairman.

Alhaji Mahamoud urged district disaster management committees to embark on forestation and fruit tree plantation to create employment for the people especially women and the youth.

He said Zonal Officers of the organization would soon be supplied with bicycles to facilitate their work.

Mr Atori advised the members to identify organizations that could assist their programmes and called on the people to work collectively to mitigate the effects of disasters. 18 Aug 04
