NCCE appeals for more funding and logistics

Kodie (Ash), June 18, GNA - Mr. Wilberforce Zangina, Afigya-Kwabre District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has appealed for more resources to enable the Commission to effectively carry out its mandate.

He said that the lack of funding and logistics were major challenges, which needed to be tackled head-on, so that the NCCE could educate the people on their fundamental rights and civic responsibilities. Mr. Zangina in an interview with GNA at Kodie on Thursday, said that the public criticised the NCCE over spoilt ballots in the 2008 Election because it did not effectively educate the electorate on voting procedures. He said that the situation could have been prevented if the Commission had sufficient resources to enable it educate the people on voting. Mr. Zangina said the NCCE was obliged to educate Ghanaians on the 1992 Constitution so that they would be abreast with provisions of the legal document.

He said that it was erroneous for some people to perceive that only lawyers, judges and politicians should be interested in constitutional matters, adding "Every Ghanaian should own a copy of the constitution and make sure that he or she becomes conversant with its provisions".
