NCCE honours Two Universities

Accra, April 28, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education on Wednesday honoured the University College of Education (UCE) at Winneba with a specially crafted Constitution Week plaque for their valuable contribution to civics in the country.

The UCEW also received a cash prize of 800,000 cedis, a copy of the 1992 Constitution and a litterbin for emerging the over-all champion at the Inter-University Debate on the topic "Multi-Party Democracy Is The Best System For Promoting National Integration."

The Cape Coast University received a cash prize of 500,000 cedis while Valley View University received 300,000 cedis for emerging second and third runners-up respectively.

Boa Amponsem Secondary School in Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region emerged the National Champion of the Second Cycle Schools Champion of Champion "Constitution Game" Competition. They were given one million cedis cash, a 21-inch Sanyo colour television set, a copy of the 1992 Constitution, a plaque and a litterbin.

Tarkwa Secondary School from the Western Region emerged second. They received 700,000 cedis and a 21-inch colour television set. St Francis Xavier Seminary from the Upper West Region took the third prize of 500,000 cedis and a Panasonic digital CD player.

All the participating school each received a copy of the 1992 Constitution, plaque and a litterbin.

St Mary's Secondary School from the Greater Accra Region received a special award for exhibiting good manners, discipline and fair play during the competition.

Community "8 & 9" football team beat Accra New Town Eleven one nil to emerge the winner of the Inter-Community football gala organised to herald the Constitution Week. The winning team received 700,000 while the loser received 500,000 cedis.

Other participating Communities included Nima, Mamprobi, Tema Community One, Tema New Town, Madina and James Town.

Presenting the award to the school at the 4th Annual Constitution Week Celebration in Accra, Mr Laary Bimi said an important ingredient in the realisation of the much cherish goal of national integration was tolerance.

He said the importance of tolerance underlined the fact that various structures and institutions provided for in the Constitution could function well when every citizen was willing and able to endure the lawful activities of others without inhibition, interference or molestation.

Mrs Barbara Karl of the Unites State Embassy in Accra, sponsors of the competition commended the NCCE for instilling the tenets of Constitutionalism in the youth. 28 April 04
