The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to undermine the electoral process in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.
Tanko-Computer claims that some officials within the EC are allegedly working against the NDC's parliamentary candidate, Faustina Akurugu.
In an interview on Joy News on Monday, December 30, 2024, Tanko questioned the delays and irregularities in the electoral process, describing them as unnecessary and damaging to public confidence.
“In all these matters, we are seeing some collusion between the EC and the NPP. That’s why we have all these problems. The only finality we have is that the EC should respect its CI, which mandates them to take certain actions, and not make decisions based on the whimsical caprices of the commission. Why are they finding it difficult to declare Dome-Kwabenya for the NDC? What is the difficulty? Why are they avoiding their own principles?” he remarked.
Tanko-Computer continued, “When this continues, we begin to suspect that there is collusion somewhere. Someone doesn’t want Madam Faustina to be declared the winner, and we don’t understand why.”
He further questioned, “Why should we suffer because of the indiscretions of your officers? The country shouldn’t have to go through this kind of ordeal. Why is the EC putting the entire nation in suspense like this?”
The EC has announced plans for a rerun of the parliamentary election at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2, following the suspension of the final declaration of the constituency results during its third attempt to collate data from three polling stations.
However, the EC was only able to successfully collate data from two of the stations.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Training at the EC, explained that the Commission rejected one of the results, citing that the statement of the poll had been wrongly completed using training sheets.
"So, the Electoral Commission rejected one; we decided to add the two valid results and see what happens,” he said.
After adding the two valid results, the margin between the two leading candidates narrowed to just 165 votes.
