NDC Flagbearer Race: NDC needs Goosie to win 2020 - Dela Coffie

An activist of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Dela Coffie has joined tens of thousands of branch and constituency executives of the party who are yearning for flag bearer aspirant Goosie Tanoh to lead the party into 2020 presidential elections.

Dela Coffie, an outspoken communication member in a Facebook post argued that the NDC has a chance to “prevent another disaster in 2020” by electing Goosie Tanoh to wrestle power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

General elections were held in Ghana on December 7, 2016 to elect a president and members of parliament.

Former Foreign Minister, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo of the then opposition New Patriotic party was elected president on his third attempt, defeating then incumbent president John Mahama of the National democratic Congress.

The humiliating defeat of over one million national votes cast continues to anger sizable members of the party who feel president John Mahama should not be given a second chance to lead the party into 2020 elections as his election records are “abysmal” compared to past NDC flag bearers.

But Mr. Mahama who seems popular and still commands support from some members of his political party, especially his past appointees, has picked up nomination forms to contest the 26th January 2019 presidential primaries election of the NDC.

This is despite perceptions of incompetence, corruption, disunity levelled against the former president by some members of his political party.

Dela Coffie, a critic of Mr. Mahama took to social media to endorse the candidature of Goosie Tanoh, calling on delegates in the upcoming NDC presidential primaries to elect Goosie Tanoh as flagbearer of the party.

He wrote “we cannot defend this abysmal showing going forward, and we need a new proposition to prevent another disaster in 2020”.

Below is the full statement

Dear NDC delegate,

Available data from the Electoral Commission shows the NDC has over the last two general elections performed below average. 50.7% in 2012 and 44.4% in 2016, with almost one million vote deficit.

We cannot defend this abysmal showing going forward, and we need a new proposition to prevent another disaster in 2020.

Do not defend 44.4%; let's give the NDC chance to be great again.
