The former president, Flt Lt J.J. Rawlings has called on supporters of the National Democratic Congress to work towards correcting the erroneous perception that the party is for northerners.

According to him the NPP is embarking on politics of tribalism which is dangerous to the country. Speaking at a massive rally at Asokore Mampong, yesterday; one of the wards that make the Asawase constituency, Mr Rawlings urged members of the party to embrace non-Muslims, Ashantis and people of different tribes into the party. He added that the Ashanti Region used to be one of his support base in 1979 and 82 adding that that change when members the NPP began their politics of lies and deception.
He said such membership drive would help the party win the 2008 general elections. he talked about poor management of the economy by the NPP. he called on the constituents to be vigilant on Thursday's bye-election to stop any rigging by the NPP. he asked his supporters not to be intimidated by scores of soldiers and policemen in the constituency. he said it is only to scare them from voting. he noted that he is waiting for a WAHALA match in Kumasi to demonstrate to the NPP that Ghanaians are fed up.
The crowd that turned up yesterday was a massive one with people climbing trees to catch a glimpse of the speakers especially former president Rawlings. Other speakers included the minority leader, Mr Alban Bagbin, and National organizer, Mr Ofosu Ampofo.
