NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to cancel the double-track system introduced by the governing New Patriotic Party government in senior high schools.

The Double-Track System of Education was implemented in 400 senior high schools nationwide for the 2018-2019 academic year by the ruling NPP.

This policy was rolled out owing to a rise in enrolment, which exceeded the capacity of existing senior high school buildings.

To accommodate more students and alleviate overcrowding in schools, the government, as part of the FSHS strategy, implemented the double-track system, which divides the complete student population and staff into two tracks; one track attends school while the other is on vacation, and vice versa.

The double track system has however faced some challenges which include inadequate infrastructure, inadequate funding, an unstable school calendar, and increased teachers’ workload.

In light of these, John Dramani Mahama during the official launch of the party’s manifesto disclosed that the double track systems introduced by the NPP will be canceled; however, free senior high school which was introduced to give the opportunity to all Junior High school leavers to have a senior high school education will be improved.

“We will expand secondary school spaces, improve the implementation of the FREE SHS, end the dreaded doubletrack system, and relieve the teacher workload,” he said.
