The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has outlined five key social interventions to alleviate the current economic hardships and protect the vulnerable if the party wins the 2024 polls.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 NDC Manifesto at Winneba, in the Central Region, on Saturday, August 24, Mahama emphasized that the NDC will prioritize the stabilization of the Ghana cedi and the macro economy through an urgent economic recovery program designed to bolster foreign reserves.

Additionally, the party plans to roll out a $10 billion "Big Push" policy focused on strategic infrastructural development to drive sustainable economic growth and transformation.

He stated that the six (6) major free initiatives that Ghanaians will benefit from are:

No-Academic-Fee Policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions under the "No-Fees-Stress" initiative:

This is part of a government initiative to lessen the burden on parents financing the cost of their children's education.

Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

The National Democratic Congress has promised to offer free tertiary education for people living with disabilities if the party wins the 2025 elections.

Free Primary Healthcare

This initiative, he explained, would complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He said that one would only require a Ghana Card to access Free Primary Healthcare without a charge.

Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares)

Also known as MahamaCares, the establishment of the Ghana Medical Care Trust will assist people suffering from chronic conditions such as kidney failure, diabetes, and other health conditions.

“I will establish the Ghana Medical Care Trust to support persons with chronic diseases such as kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, sickle cell, hypertension, and other health-related diseases,” he said.

Reintroduce and redeploy the SLTF Plus

Reintroduce and redeploy the SLTF Plus to support fees financing for continuing students in public tertiary institutions under the “No-Fees-Stress’ initiative.

Free Sanitary Pads for Schoolgirls

As part of their mission to promote gender inclusivity in Ghana’s education system, the NDC has promised to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls below the age of 20 should they be voted into power come December.

According to the Running Mate of the Party, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, thousands of young girls miss as many as 5 days of school every month simply because they cannot afford sanitary pads — an “unacceptable” and “unfair” situation she said the NDC seeks to remedy.
