The Ashanti Regional Chairman and Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were have been granted enquiry bail in the sum of ?2 million by the regional police. The two, Messrs Nti Fordjour and Sly Akakpovi, were invited by the Regional Crime Office in connection with a programme held at Aboabo Metropolitan Authority School Party during, which former President Jerry Rawlings delivered his positive defiance speech, which has generated controversy.
According to a source close to the Regional Police Command, the regional executives of the NDC did not obtain police permit to hold the function. The regional executive, on their part, claim that though they did not apply on paper, they notified the regional police of the arrival in Kumasi of the ex-President.
The NDC, about a fortnight ago, launched the working committee of the party’s women’s wing and former President Rawlings was invited to speak at the function. Ex-President’s Rawlings call for positive defiance at the function has generated a lot of public anxiety leading to his interrogation by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
