Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi says the NDC Regional Chairmen who have endorsed the candidature of former President John Mahama were forced to do so.

Chairman Wontumi claims to have concrete information of the move by the 10 regional Chairmen to make Mahama more popular than his rivals ahead of their flagbearership race.

Speaking on Neat FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’, the NPP Chiarman noted that “Mahama has promised the regional chairmen to help them maintain their seats in their regional elections so in return they have to endorse him [Mahama] to win the flagbearership race as well.”

“I'm surprised why these Chairmen will take such a decision to single out the former President for this subtle endorsement when others have also expressed their interest to contest the race," he added.

Ten Regional Chairmen of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have backed the candidature of John Dramani Mahama for election 2020, even before the latter announces his intention.

The ten regional Chairmen after a meeting on Thursday, November 9, 2017, with the former President, issued a communiqué in which they urged the former President to consider running for the 2020 polls.

The brief statement did not give further details as to why they were making the call.

They also urged him to embark on a “Thank you” tour of the country, although belated, to thank party loyalists for their support during the December 2016 polls.
