The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Executive Committee of Tema Central has called for peace, unity, and non-divisiveness in the appointment of a metropolitan chief executive for Tema.
A statement issued by Benjamin Djakumah, the NDC Tema Central Constituency Chair, and sent to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), urges political party members, supporters, and the people of Tema to remain calm and united while respecting the due process.
The statement emphasized that the selection and appointment of the MCE is a constitutional responsibility of the president, guided by consultations and aimed at the best interests of the people. It also expressed confidence in the president's wisdom to choose a competent, visionary, and inclusive leader who would serve Tema with integrity and commitment to its development.
The committee urged all stakeholders to refrain from divisive actions, statements, or demonstrations that could threaten the peace of the city. It appealed to political actors and community members to prioritize the collective progress of Tema over personal interests and to work together to build a peaceful, prosperous municipality.
Furthermore, the NDC Tema Central Constituency pledged to support any nominee chosen by the president for the sake of peace, unity, and progress.
Meanwhile, the youth of Tema, in a demonstration at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) on the weekend, reiterated their demand for an indigene to be appointed to the position of MCE. They expressed opposition to the nomination of Ms. Ebi Bright, the NDC's 2024 parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, as the MCE. The youth burned tires and placed a red banner with the inscription, "The mayor of TMA should remain an indigene. No compromise," at the assembly's entrance.
