NDC Women’s Leader Boozes to Death

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Organizer of the Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency, Martha Alhassan, who incessantly drunk alcohol after the announcement of the death of President Mills, has died under bizarre circumstances.

The 45-year-old teacher of Buipe Local Authority (LA) Primary School, who had four children, according to relations, starved herself and took to boozing to mourn the ex-president,

She was found dead near a drinking spot at Buipe, the Central Gonja District Capital last Thursday. Police in the area, who confirmed her death of the teacher, told Daily Guide that preliminary investigations indicated she died as a result of excessive drinking of alcohol.

According to some relations, early last Tuesday she was among dozens of sympathizers who received news about the death of the President and took to the streets to wail over the loss. Teacher Martha vowed to embark on a hunger strike and she excessively drunk alcohol to console herself in view of her love for the late President, who she described as man of peace (Asomdwe hene).

Relatives said they initially thought she was kidding but she continued the escapade late Wednesday, which attracted the attention of people. According to the family, they thought she was in coma and tried to resuscitate her by rushing her to the Buipe Clinic but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body has since been released to the family and buried in accordance with the customs of the area. Her final funeral rites, Daily Guide gathered, will be performed at Busunu near Damongo in the West Gonja District where she hails from.

It would be recalled that the entire country was thrown into a state of shock following the sudden demise of the late President at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The former President was subsequently rushed to the hospital and admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Panef Ward but he gave up the ghost at about 2:15 pm on Tuesday.

Clouds of sorrow hovered over the entire country but some persons, including Martha Alhassan, consumed large volumes of hard liquor.

It is unclear whether the late teacher was an alcoholic but sources told Daily Guide that she took to drinking after the President’s death.
