The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has alleged that a financier of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who is knee-deep in the menace of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) has been arrested.

According to him, the NDC financier, who he named as ‘Nana Anyimadu Noah,’ has been bringing in people from neighbouring countries, including Togo and Burkina Faso, to mine in water bodies in the country.

He said that an anti-galamsey taskforce arrested some of these Togolese illegal miners (galamseyers) in the Eastern Region, and they have all been arraigned before the court.

“Two days ago, all the galamseyers who were arrested by the Ghana Armed Forces and the small-scale mining taskforce, who said they were from the Volta Region turned out to be from Togo… during the arrest, one of them was in tears and one woman told him not to cry because men don’t cry.

“When they were arrested, they said that the name of the leader who brought them was Nana Anyimadu Noah; he has been arraigned before the court as we speak now, I have his video on my phone,” he said in the Twi dialect during an interview on Angel FM.

Dr Ayew Afriye, who is the NPP Campaign Coordinator for the Middle Belt, added, “The major financier of the NDC, who says that the government is destroying our waters so vote against them, people thought he was engaging in small-scale mining, not knowing he was the one who has been bringing Togolese and Burkinabes to be mining in our waters.”

He indicated that the taskforce has seized equipment including speedboats and 40 chanfans from these cabal of illegal miners.
