President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday said the performance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the provision of tertiary education in the country has been unparalleled and places the NDC Administration ahead of other governments.
He said that apart from the Universities of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Cape Coast University that were established by the Kwame Nkrumah regime, the NDC government has been instrumental in the establishment of the Winneba University College of Education, Tarkwa University of Mines and the University for Development Studies in Tamale, Wa and Navrongo.
President Mahama said this when he addressed students of the Ho Polytechnic as part of his three-day campaign tour of the Volta Region.
The President is in the Region to launch the NDC manifesto, inspect and inaugurate development projects and address party members at various rallies organized in his honour.
President Mahama said apart from those universities, the government this year inaugurated two new universities at Ho and Sunyani.
“The NDC government is the government that established seven new Regional Polytechnics apart from the traditional Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi Polytechnics that were in existence before the NDC took over the reigns of government.”
President Mahama said the NDC had drawn up a comprehensive education package in its new manifesto, adding that another public University would be established in the Eastern Region as it was the only region that was without a public university.
He said a comprehensive programme had also been drawn to expand educational facilities in all the ten regional polytechnics that would make adequate provision for the establishment of more degree programmes across the country.
On Secondary education, President Mahama said NDC under former President Jerry John Rawlings established a total of 119 Senior High Schools that had over the years absorbed more students who would otherwise have been stranded after their Junior High School education.
President Mahama later inaugurated a two-storey 300 capacity girls’ dormitory at the Mawuli Senior High School at Ho.
He also inspected and inaugurated school projects at the OLA Girls Senior High School in the Ho Municipality.
