NDC mourns Pope

Accra, April 4, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday lauded the Pope John Paul II, who died last Saturday, as an outstanding religious leader.

"The late Pontiff lived a revolutionary life, which made him an outstanding religious leader," the NDC said in a statement signed by Mr Bede Ziedeng, Acting General Secretary.

The NDC said Pope John Paul's belief in international brotherhood and his commitment to the cause of humanity saw him touring the globe even at the peril of his frail health."

The NDC said Pope John Paul II extensively used religion as an instrument for peace and social justice, preaching and drawing world attention to the plight of the poor and the deprived.

It said he exercised circumspection in not condemning atrocities committed under the guise of religion and called for tolerance among the various followers of the world's religions.

"Pope John Paul will forever be remembered for his pontifical work in visiting and worshiping with other religions, which refocused the Roman Catholic Church in world affairs," the NDC said. The Pope would be buried on Friday at the Vatican.
