A communicator of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Nana Agyei Kwadwo Yeboah aka Nana K, has supported the president’s call on just the two major political parties i.e. NDC and NPP to initiate the process of disbanding all vigilante groups in the country, since they are the sole beneficiaries of these militia groups.
In an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio87.5 FM, he stated emphatically that neither the National Peace Council (NPC), nor Civil Society organizations (CSOs’) own a political or benefit from activities of vigilante groups hence the need for only the two parties to resolve the issue.
“My party is ready to meet and dialogue with the opposition NDC to find the best way in dissolving the vigilante groups in the country”.
He however expressed shock at the conditions by the NDC and the desire to have other stakeholders join the dialogue.
The NDC has been in power for several years and benefited from activities of militia groups but never gathered the courage to disband them and yet, they have gathered the courage to make demands before coming to the table as prescribed by President Akufo-Addo. That is bad and needless.
He suggested the parties should have met, discuss the matter, and agree on the way forward.
He accused the NDC of dragging the meeting with their conditions because of their lack of willingness to disband their militia groups.
"I‘ve heard Mr. Johnsen Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC, saying that the umbrella family was not ready to disband the Hawks, a militia group affiliated to them. No wonder they are of double standards when it comes to the disbanding of vigilante groups.’’
He added: “After all the NPP leadership and the NDC leadership are not in a fierce battle, we are friends and not enemies. NPP chairman Mr. Freddy Blay and NDC chairman Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofu meet on severally platforms; they share jokes, laugh and nothing shows we they are in a fight. SO why should be difficult for the parties to meet?
“Is not surprising that the NDC is calling on the National Peace Council to mediate this disbanding process, when we have heard in a leaked tape purporting to come from the NDC chairperson Samuel Ampofo, admonishing party communicators to insult the chair, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante?
