The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it has reached an agreement with the Ghana Police Service on its ‘mother of all demonstrations’ against the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), scheduled for September 17, 2024.

Speaking to journalists at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on September 9, 2024, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Kwetey, indicated that the party has reached an agreement with the police on the date for the protest.

He added that the routes that would be used for the nationwide demonstration in the nation’s capital, Accra, have also been agreed on.

“I would say we have largely concluded that the date is feasible. So, the demonstration is definitely going to happen next Tuesday (September 17). We have also agreed on the route we are going to use. We are going to start from Kwame Nkrumah Circle, come through Farisco, continue all the way to the National Theatre and from there go on to Parliament House and from Parliament House, will finish at the premises of the Electoral Commission," he said.

He added, “What we are going to just finalize right now is exactly the point of termination. That's the only part we want to complete with them right away. So, we are going with them right now to go and have a final look at the place in order to agree.”

Fifi Kwetey also stated that the leadership of the party in the various constituencies and districts across the country are also making similar arrangements for the demonstration.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, announced that the NDC will hold the 'mother of all demonstrations' across the length and breadth of Ghana on September 17, 2024, against the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

Addressing the media after filing the nomination of the Flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, at the head office of the EC on Monday, September 9, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah said that his party will be joined by other political parties and Civil Society Organisations to demonstrate against the EC for failing to address issues with the 2024 voter register.

The NDC has also called for an independent audit into the voter register after it said it found supposed irregularities in the register, a demand the EC has rejected.

“A draft register is not a register. Today, if we have to do any election, we have to rely on the 2020 register… On the 17th of this month, the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals.

“Descend on the Electoral Commission offices, and we in Accra would descend to the headquarters and present a further petition as to why we think that they should conduct themselves in a manner that would guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair election,” he said.
