The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a court injunction to stop the Electoral commission (EC) from going ahead with the printing of ballot papers and issuing a notice of poll for the Amenfi Central Constituency, citinewsroom.com has reported.
This is the NDC’s reaction to the disqualification of the party’s parliamentary candidate in the constituency.
The NDC’s Amenfi Central parliamentary candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, was disqualified by the EC from contesting in the forthcoming 2024 parliamentary election.
This disqualification resulted from an Order for Interlocutory Injunction issued by the High Court in Sekondi on May 31, 2024, in the case of Gyedu Frimpong & 4 Others vs. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Commission.
The court order restrains Joana Gyan Cudjoe from presenting herself as the duly elected NDC parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central until the final determination of the matter. It also restrains the NDC and the Electoral Commission from recognizing or affording her any rights or privileges as the candidate.
This was contained in a letter issued by the EC to the parliamentary candidate on October 16, 2024.
The NDC, however, contends that the EC’s decision to proceed with printing ballot papers without addressing the issue infringes on the rights of their candidate and the legal process.
The NDC is appealing to the court to issue an order to prevent the EC from printing or distributing ballot materials for Amenfi Central until the legal issue concerning the disqualification is resolved.
The situation has complicated the campaign efforts of the NDC in the constituency as the election draws near.
