NDC supporters Urged To Buy New Cars For Rawlings

The Brong Ahafo Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has called on members and supporters of the party everywhere in the world to contribute towards procuring vehicles for the use of Ex-President J.J. Rawlings.

In a statement signed by the NDC Regional Chairman, Alhaji Kwadwo Maama Adam the branch said it has learnt with dismay the decision of the government to collect all but one of the government vehicles in the possession of the Ex-President. It said "We are amazed because the NPP (New Patriotic Party) leadership appears to allow itself to be pushed around by sentimental elements within their fold without caring about how their emotive decisions breach the 1992 Constitution?.

The Regional Branch asserted that the call by the NPP Youth League on the government to strip Ex-President Rawlings of all privileges he is enjoying is uncalled for. It quoted Article 68 (9) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that the pension payable to the President and the facilities available to him shall not be varied to his disadvantage during his lifetime.

The Regional NDC branch emphasised that so long as Ex-President Rawlings lives, the government of Ghana would have to provide his residential and office accommodation, bodyguards and vehicles to move him, his family and bodyguards around and pay his medical bills of his family. It stated that the recent statements of the Ex-President should not over sensitise the government to over react.

The Regional branch said it is their considered opinion that there is nothing criminal or treasonable about the Ex-Presidents calling on Ghanaians to use lawful positive defiant methods to stop the NPP rot in their tracks.
