NDC would've still won election 2024 even if they presented a ‘goat’ against NPP – Brigadier General Nunoo

Brigadier General (retired) Joseph Nunoo Mensah has stated that it is not surprising that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to him, the citizens needed change due to the economic challenges in the country.

He explained that despite the challenges Ghanaians faced, their consistent complaints against the government were ignored, with the assumption that they would still vote for the ruling government regardless.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on December 20, 2024, he stated that the anger and hunger of Ghanaians prior to the elections would have led them to vote for an animal to lead them rather than the NPP.

"I knew there would be a loss, but I didn't believe it would be that bad. You see, there are a lot of lessons to learn. Even though I was surprised, I wasn't too surprised because I was hearing questions about the government on a daily basis.

"A similar thing happened in America because sometimes we take it for granted that people will always vote for us, and it will be the same trend for them to vote again. People are wising up, people are growing. People are hungry. I have lived through poverty, so I understand it. Some of them don't know poverty, so they thought regardless, people would vote for them. So, I wasn't surprised that they lost, but I was surprised about the scale of it," he said.

He added, "Per the scale, people sent a message. It was as if all of them considered a certain pattern, but none was like that. Rather, people were talking, and they were not listening. I think it is a lesson for all of us.

"Look, a time has come when the people said they want change. If they had even brought a goat to contest against the NPP, they would have voted for the goat. They wanted change; they were tired because nobody was listening to them," he said.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, declared John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, the winner in the 2024 presidential elections, with a total of 6,328,397 votes.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) received 4,657,304 votes.

Mahama's party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieved historic success by gaining a majority in Parliament.
