NGO provides 53 Computers to three ICT Centres

Akoase (E/R), Jan. 29, GNA - Big-Step Foundation, a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO), based in the Birim North and Akyemmansa Districts has assisted Adausena and Ayirebi communities to construct Information Communication and Technology (ICT) centres and stocked them with 43 computers and accessories to enhance ICT training in the rural areas.

The NGO has also presented 10 computers and accessories to the National Youth Leadership Training Centre at Asankare in the Ashanti Region to supplement government's efforts to enhance ICT training in the country.

The Board Chairman of Big Step Foundation, Mr John Bright Denkyirah, disclosed this when he presented a quantity of science equipment worth GH C5,000 to the science laboratory of Saint Michael Senior High School at Akoase in the Birim North District on Thursday. He said the organization would provide 54 computers and a quantity of books to the St Michael Senior High School (SHS), as well as the provision of ICT Centre and a community library at Akoase.

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, the Birim North District Director of Education, Mr Eric Atakora, said the school established 16 years ago by the community faced a lot of challenges such as inadequate hostel facilities, school library, computer laboratory, teachers bungalows and means of transport. He said the school obtained 99 percent in the 2007 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with 23 out of the 77 students presented obtaining passes in all the eight subjects.

Mr Atakora who is also acting headmaster of the school commended the NGO for the assistance and appealed to the well-to-do in the society to come to the aid of the school. The Board Chairman of the School, Mr Osei Akoto, said some of the students who passed through the school had completed University and were now teaching at their alma mater. He therefore advised the students to concentrate on their studies to be able to pass their examinations with ease and further their education to become responsible adults. The Chief of the town, Nana Kwakye Acheampong II, appealed to the Catholic Church, and other stake holders to contribute towards the development of the school.
