NGO suggests community support for drug addicted people

Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), a Sunyani-based non-governmental organisation has suggested the need for community support for people addicted to hard drugs.

In a message read on his behalf at this year’s celebration of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday in Sunyani, Mr Ahenu explained that would help in breaking the stigma associated with the affected people and promote their faster recovery.

The event organised by Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Narcotics Control Board was on the theme: “Let’s develop our lives, our communities and our identities without drugs.”

Mr Ahenu emphasised that community support is extremely important to prevent, treat, rehabilitate and accept those addicted to hard drugs.

The CEO of GLOMEF therefore appealed to accomplished individuals and groups in various communities to show good leadership qualities as role models to direct guide and empower young people to deal with life challenges to buffer substance abuse.

“Let us be messengers by way of providing factual information on the negative socio-economic effects of substances abuse to bring about behavioural changes, particularly among the youth in our communities,” Mr Ahenu said.

He promised GLOMEF would continue to support efforts that would bring about prevention of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the country.
