NMC endorses interim Chief Executives of state-owned media

Accra, Feb. 25, GNA - The National Media Commission (NMC) has endorsed the arrangements made by the Boards of the state-owned media for the temporary administration of the respective organisations following the Supreme Court judgement involving the appointment of Chief Executives.

A statement issued in Accra said Mr Sam Clegg, a member of the Ghana News Agency Board, will act as its General Manager while Mr Gilbert Adanusa, a member of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Board, will act as its Director-General.

The Graphic Communications Group Limited will have Mr Elvis Aryeh, Editor of the Daily Graphic, as its acting Managing Director while Mrs Joyce Boe-Ocansey, Member of the New Times Corporation Board, has already been appointed by the Board to act as its General Manager.

The statement said the NMC is in the process of appointing substantive Chief Executives in consultation with the President for the said organisations. The Supreme Court, by a unanimous decision last month, declared null and void all government appointments of Chairmen, other members of governing bodies and chief executives of state-owned Media made after 1992.

The seven-member panel, chaired by Mr Justice E.K. Wiredu, ruled that those appointments made after the coming into force of the Fourth Republican Constitution of 1992 were done in contravention of Article 168 of the constitution, which deals with the appointment of board members of state-owned media.

The article states that the NMC shall appoint the chairmen and other members of the governing bodies of public corporations managing the state-owned media.
