FOR THE 18 months that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been in power, it has contracted loans to the tune of ?15 trillion, excluding aids and grants.
This was disclosed at Nkoranza last weekend by Hon. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi West and minority spokesman on Food and Agriculture.
He was addressing teeming supporters of the NDC at a public lecture organised by the party to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the June 4 revolution.
He said if the NPP had contracted ?15 trillion in only 18 months, then the ?46 trillion the (P)NDC borrowed for Ghana's development within 20 years was nothing strange.
Asiedu-Nketia predicted that by the time the NPP government's tenure of office would be over, it would contract more loans than the (P)NDC did in 20 years.
He castigated Kufuor's government for cheating cocoa farmers by paying only ?6.2 million for a tonne of cocoa out of ?13.5 million paid on the world market.
Alhaji Kwadwo Mama Adam, Brong Ahafo Regional chairman of the NDC, said although the June 4 revolution brought about the death of some people, it ushered in the social and economic transformation of the country.
He asked the supporters of the party to allow the spirit of June 4 to rekindle volunteerism and unite them.
A senior cadre of the party, Kwabena Anane Adjei, noted that the June 4 revolution can never be described as an abberation in the nation's political history since it brought positive gains to the country.
