The New Patriotic Party’s disdain and discrimination against people of the northern extraction was put into top gear when no high ranking official of the party from Accra was present for the 3rd day funeral rites of the former vice president, the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama held in Tamale on Tuesday.

Conspicuously missing were the party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo who as at the time of the funeral rite was fervently preparing for the IEA presidential debate and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The man who brought the former Veep into the political lime light, former President John Agyekum Kufuor was also nowhere to be found; the National Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsetsebi Lamptey and the General Secretary, Kwadzo Owusu Afriyie never saw it worthy of attending the funeral rite.
Family members of the former Veep, and some residents in the Northern regional capital, Tamale called into the Mamobi office of The Al-Hajj fuming with anger for the heartless and disheartening attitudes of the NPP, particularly it’s vice presidential candidate, Dr Bawumia, who he was receiving political coaching from when he felt sick.
In fact, the late Veep’s relatives, who pleaded on conditions of anonymity, did not discount the fact that the conduct of the NPP executives goes to confirm the NPP party’s abhorrence and discrimination of people of the northern extraction.
“We are highly disappointed in the NPP that they treated our dear one like this. Would they have treated one of their own like that? Was that the treatment they gave Kwadzo Baah Wiredu after his demise?” a relative in rickety voice asked
The former Vice-President passed on at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital at 09:45 am last Friday at the age of 66 after been admitted at the Cardiothoracic Centre for ailment believed to be heart related.

It would be recalled that before the late former Vice President was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra following his sudden illness, he was campaigning non-stop in the Northern Region with Nana Akufo Addo’s running mate, Dr. Bawumia for the December elections.

In fact, the late Aliu Mahama was tasked by the Akufo-Addo campaign to smoothen the way for the NPP in the three Northern Regions in addition to giving political coaching to the Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The family members of the late veep believed that the NPP and for that matter, Akufo-Addo is not worth campaigning for let alone dying for.

“At this moment all what Akufo-Addo thinks, smells, feels, cares dreams of and eats simply centers on his ambitious quest for the presidency. That is why he ignored a whole former vice president who was campaigning for him. Is this how heartless the NPP can be?” a heavy heart family member stated
It has been rumored that the late vice-president collapsed on the campaign tour two times, the first time in the Atebubu area and the second time in the Northern Region before his demise.

Other relatives who spoke with The Al-Hajj noted that they were not surprise that the NPP treated their dear one like that, adding that they treated him shabbily when he was the vice president under Kufuor, to the extent that the chief of staff was administratively powerful that him.

They however called on Ghanaians, especially Northerners to have a second thought when dealing with NPP. “They will use you when they need you and dump you when they are through with you.”
