NPP Chairman In Trouble

The Birim North Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Emmanuel Kofi Amoako is sitting on tenterhooks.

This paper gathered that there is trouble brewing in the Constituency over the legitimacy of the chairman in the wake of the split of the Constituency into two. In a letter signed by 57 polling station chairmen to the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, they contended that Mr Amoako who is the current chairman of the Birim North Constituency cannot continue to be the chairman for the Constituency because of the newly crated Abirem Constituency because of the newly created Abirem Constituency, carved from the Birim North Constituency.

At a meeting held at Pankese last Sunday, April 4, 2004, 57 out of the 58 polling station chairmen in the Abirem Constituency also accused Mr Amoako of some misdeeds, serious among which is the flouting of the party?s policy of ban on campaigning by parliamentary aspirants in constituencies where there are NPP sitting Members of Parliament.

Mr Amoako is also accused of touring parts of the constituency to introduce one Esther Dapaah as his choice over the sitting MP, Hon William Boakye Akot. The polling agents therefore called on the Regional Executives to immediately dissolve the entire executive of the Birim North Constituency, because in their opinion, since the Constituency is splitted, there is no such constituency at Birim North Constituency. The constituency has now been divided into Abirem Constituency and Ofoase/Ayirebi constituency.

The polling agents in their letter cited acts that tend to undermine the unity of party member as a bother which reinforces their position. ?We are making this request because of recent activities and behaviour of Mr Amoako, which is creating a serious problem of mistrust and division within the party.?

?Contrary to the party?s laid down procedure for the election of parliamentary candidates, the chairman is accused of openly supporting one candidate while the goes round destroying the reputation, integrity and records of the incumbent MP, Hon Dr Akoto,? the letter stated, adding that ?he is at logger head with most of the local party executives and party faithful who kick against this development.?
