Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - A Presidential Aspirants of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday said delegates to the December National Delegates Congress of the party face two obvious choices between Mr Daniel Kwaku Botwe and the other 16 aspirants.
"Am the only General Secretary of the party in modern democratic dispensation to have led the party to two general elections with 100 percent record, upheld and defended the philosophy of the Danquah/Busia tradition under difficult period," Mr. Botwe told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra.
"You entrusted the towering and sensitive position of General Secretary of the party to me, with mandate to lead the NPP as its operational commander to battle the dreadful National Democratic Congress in Elections 2000.
"Against all odds, I mobilised the ground forces, motivated you, stayed with you in the trenches day and night, with total support and understanding, NPP defeated the enemy to form a Government after 30 years in opposition, he said."
Mr. Botwe, portraying military artistry explained: "I was impressed upon to accept a ministerial post in 2001, but I declined the offer preferring to stay at post as commander to marshal forces for the 2004 battle.
"I started the electoral battle for 2004, right after the presidential run-off of December 2000, the electoral battle of 2008 demands a flag bearer who understands the dynamics of modern politics to lead the NPP, and Dan Kwaku Botwe is the man," he stated.
He said: "as a former commander a party nurtured in the best traditions of liberal democracy, my campaigns would continue to be thorough, well planned vigorous and clean.
Mr. Botwe therefore advised the other aspirants to prepare themselves mentally and emotionally for a shock since "I am poised for victory." He challenged the other aspirants and their followers to ensure that they have clean electioneering campaign. The Presidential Aspirant who served briefly as Minister of Information and National Orientation stated that; he is the most tested and multitalented in the race for the presidency.
He explained: "I know the heart-beat of the delegates because as the General Secretary I had worked closely with them in the hamlets and trenches".
"We lost sleep in order to strategise and beat the over-confident NDC. It was not an easy task and I am happy to say that the people who know the depth of our sacrifices and dangers we encountered have decided to put the destiny of this nation in my capable hands", he stated He however, advised the other aspirants: "Your campaign should not bring down the democratic process of our party but it should rather raise its image and fortune for victory in the general elections." The NPP aspirant said the main issue now is which of them can rule Ghana better. "I have a record to show and the others must also demonstrate it and stop portraying government's collective efforts as their personal record".
He said NPP under President John Agyekum Kufuor's administration "laid a solid foundation for the development of Ghana and what we need now is a visionary leader to ensure a take-off."
