The Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jeff Konadu-Addo, has stated that he will never support any Muslim presidential candidate who may arise from the party should the Muslim community in the country fail to make the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, president in the 2024 elections.
According to him, the NPP has done well by putting to shame naysayers who accused the party of not supporting Muslim candidates by voting massively for the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He posited that it is time for the Muslim community to support their own and make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia president.
However, failure on their part will result in his refusal to support any other Muslim candidate who may come from the party.
Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on October 31, 2024, he stated, “Bawumia is a Zongo person; he has lived in Zongo, and if we go and vote, and despite his status as a Muslim, Bawumia loses in the Zongos, he loses in the Northern region, and he loses in the Islamic part of Ghana, then I am telling you the truth. If you will misunderstand me, fine. If that happens and the next time a Muslim aims to contest as president, the same way they disappointed Bawumia, I won’t support such a candidate. No.
“So, I am telling the Muslim community that this is the first time for them to prove that they can make a Muslim President of Ghana. Today, even Christians have accepted Bawumia, so if the Muslims do not bring Bawumia and he loses the election in a stronghold of the Muslim community… if you disappoint Mahamudu Bawumia, do you expect me to follow another Muslim again? No, I won’t do that because you will disappoint him as well.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to govern the country with his own ideas should he win the 2024 elections.
He is being challenged in the election by the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
