The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has reacted to the gargantuan defeat of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the 2024 general election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the 2024 presidential election with 56.55%, the highest percentage gain in a presidential election since 1996. The NDC also swept the seats in Parliament and is projected to acquire at least 180 seats in the House.

Reacting to the outcome of the elections, the Majority Leader expressed his disappointment with his party losing so many seats in the House.

He, however, indicated that the NPP's massive defeat in Parliament does not define the party and is nothing new.

“In 2016, we had a resounding victory, and today, we find ourselves on the other side of the equation. It’s a reminder that elections are a part of the process, not the conclusion. The political landscape is ever-changing, and this loss does not define us.

“The result stings, and I know it hurts. But we must remember that this is not the end of the journey. As a party, we will regroup, reassess, and strategise to win the hearts of Ghanaians once again,” he said while addressing the media after winning is reelection bid.

Afenyo-Markin indicated that the outcome of the election is the will of Ghanaians and must be respected.

“If the electorate has decided to place their trust in the NDC this time around, we must honour that decision. The people have spoken, and it is their choice we must respect, even if it differs from ours,” he added.
