The death has been reported of Professor Kofi Amoah, New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asutifi South.

Mr. A. K. Kusi, Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary of the NPP, told the Ghana News Agency that Prof. Amoah died after a short illness at the Hwidiem St. Elizabeth's Catholic Hospital on Friday night.

He said Prof. Amoah returned from a political rally at about 8.00 p.m. on Friday in good health but later complained of bodily pains at about 11.30 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital but died shortly on arrival.

Mr Kusi said he received the shocking news of the candidate's death at about 2'oclock this morning through a telephone call. The body has been deposited at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital in Kumasi. Prof. Amoah was a consultant for the United Nations before entering politics.

Meanwhile, reports reaching Sunyani say that the death of Pro. Amoah has triggered massive demonstrations by NPP supporters in some major towns in the constituency such as Acherensua, Hwidiem, Mahame and Dediesoaba.
