The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Savannah Regional Chairman Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu, alias Professor Kalamonia, has accused some chiefs in Gonjaland of openly campaigning for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
The livid Chairman is alarmed by the conduct of those chiefs, allegedly doing house-to-house campaigns based on tribalism and advises them to be mindful of their neutrality in the political space.
He advised them to act as custodians of the land and allow people to independently exercise their franchise on December 7, 2024, without intimidation or tribal influence.
In an interview, Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu said the identified chiefs risk losing their respect and could suffer the consequences of acting as mainstream politicians.
"Chiefs are supposed to remain neutral when it comes to politics, but some of the chiefs have clothed themselves with political party colours".
"The NPP in Savannah Region respects and holds the chiefs of Gonjaland in high esteem but will not hesitate to handle any chief who is publicly engaging in partisan politics."
He praised the Overlord of Gonja land, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I, for remaining neutral in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
He explained that the NPP has competitive advantages in terms of constituency analysis.
"The NDC Presidential candidate, H.E John Dramani Mahama, who hails from Savannah Region, has 7 constituencies in the region, whilst his running mate Madam Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, who hails from the Central Region, has 23 constituencies making a total of 30 constituencies as compared to the NPP."
"The NPP Presidential candidate Dr. Bawumia's region, which is the North East Region, has 6 constituencies, the NPP running mate Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh's region (Ashanti Region) has 47 constituencies, whilst the President H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's region (Eastern Region) has 33 constituencies making a total of 86 constituencies for NPP."
Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu reminded citizens of the Savannah Region to remember the region's creation and retain the NPP in power to accomplish its unfinished development agenda.
