NPP declares Okai Koi South primary null and void

Accra, June 1, GNA - Mr Sammy Crabbe, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday declared as null and void the delegates' conference convened on Sunday June 1 to acclaim Nana Akomea as the parliamentary candidate for the Okai Koi South constituency in Accra.

In a statement in Accra, Mr. Crabbe said the procedure was in contravention with the constitution of the party, which states that the constituency chairperson shall be the executive head of the party in the constituency and the convener of meetings of the Constituency Executive Committee.

He noted that Article 6:19 also states that every constituency executive committee should convene extraordinary constituency delegates' conference to select the parliamentary candidate for the constituency.

"We wish to state that the constituency chairman did not convene any constituency executive committee meeting to discuss and convene any constituency delegates' conference to select the parliamentary candidates for the Okai Koi south constituency of the NPP on Sunday, the 1st of May, 2008 at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex," he said.

Mr Crabbe said due process was not followed in the "so called acclamation" and that the region was not aware of any such delegates' conference and did not officially assign any of its officers to supervise it.

"An investigation will be conducted into the whole matter and we entreat all members, delegates and party faithful to remain calm as the party will ensure that the procedure established by the constitution of the NPP for the election of parliamentary candidates is followed," he added.
