The Member of Parliament for Kintampo North constituency and Vice Chairman of the Education Committee of Parliament, Joseph Kwame Kumah, has criticized the former government for failing to address the weaknesses associated with the program.

Providing details of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government's plans for the program, he highlighted that the government has done an exhaustive assessment of the initiative and will implement measures to address the shortfalls.

Mr. Kumah pointed out that the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government's obsession with achieving political advantage with Free SHS blinded them from addressing the issues that undermined the quality of second-cycle education in the country.

He advanced the viewpoint that by, prioritizing short-term political gains over careful planning, the former government encountered significant obstacles that hindered the effective implementation of the program.

“The NPP rushed into implementing Free SHS. The NDC had an agreement with the World Bank to complete the E-block projects before rolling it out, but the NPP used the program as propaganda to win elections,” he stated.

He pledged that the initiative will be revamped to tackle its shortcomings and enhance the second cycle of education in the country.

So far, over 3.5 million Ghanaians have benefited from the initiative since its introduction in 2017.
