The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma North constituency, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has said there is nothing wrong with prioritising the needs of members of the party than others in her constituency.
She believes addressing the needs of NPP members first makes more sense because such individuals supported the party’s bid to power.
The legislator said favouring one's party member is a norm for every governing party.
She told Accra-based Joy FM in an interview that: “It is not about NPP, NDC, but NPP are of course my priority and I ensure that they get it. I emphasise that every Member of Parliament or government that comes [to power] ensures that they also follow and help [supporters] to get a place.”
Reminded by the reporter that, she is not the MP for only NPP supporters, the lawmaker said “We are not trying to be honest but everybody, [that is] NDC member will tell you NDC is his priority, but me, mine statement from beginning was that it doesn’t matter whether you come from NPP, NDC, CPP or whatever, the fact that you need a job and you come at the right time and it is there, I’ll give it to you.”
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, George Ayisi Boateng made a similar statement last year during a meeting with members of the party.
