Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah Asante, has proposed solutions to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over issues leading to some aggrieved Members of Parliament going independent in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Speaking to Kwadwo Oppong Kyeremeh on the Angel Morning Show, on Monday, September 2, 2024, he said the leadership of the NPP must sit up immediately to find a last solution to the matter.

His suggestions align with the recent development where at least two incumbent MPs declared to contest the 2024 Parliamentary elections as independent candidates. They are the MP for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, and Cynthia Morrison, the MP for Agona West.

Their decision stemmed from their defeat in the party’s parliamentary primary.

Dr. Asante stated that the move by these MPs will go against the NPP because in every dispensation of politics, “teamwork is required.”

According to him, “The NPP member’s decision to run as independent candidates is primarily due to some comments made during their campaign adding members of the NPP have some misunderstandings among them can reduce the capability of the party.

Members who have decided to leave the party will have a negative impact on the party. The party needs people to join, not leave because the vote of every member counts,” he said.

He urges the leadership of the party to solve every misunderstanding among the elephant fraternity in other to make the party a united force because more members “may decide to leave, and the more they leave, the more votes they lose.”

Dr. Asante states, “One way they can settle the disputes among these aggrieved MPs is knowing how to speak to them. They must make sure they do not use offensive words towards each other because political communication is key.”
