The youth arm of the opposition Nation Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of not committed in the decentralization process of the country.

The youth in a press statement stated that there is a deliberate attempt by the government of the day not to give even a single new assembly to the Volta Region.

According to them, “The very administration that claims that one of the single most important reasons for the decision to divide the Volta Region is to fast-track the development of the yet to be created Oti Region, are not ready to give the Volta Region new districts, as has been done in the other regions.”

“We the young people of the Volta Region, are of the view that the NPP has missed the opportunity to show how genuine they are in the decision to split the region” the statement read further.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE YOUTH WING OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS IN THE VOLTA REGION, ON THE 15TH MARCH, 2018, ON THE DECISION BY THE PRESIDENT NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO GOVERNMENT TO IGNORE THE VOLTA REGION IN THE CREATION OF NEW ASSEMBLIES

The passage of the Local Governance Act 936 2016, by the previous government of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, was yet another landmark in the decentralization process.

The passage was a welcome news for the citizenry, there are some exciting novelties which was meant to help the dynamics of the Metropolitan, Municipal, District Assemblies, as it serves as the basis of the country's decentralization process.

Government has created 38 new MMDAs , this brings the number of the MMDAs in Ghana to 254 from the previous 216

The Legislative Instrument that supported the creation of the assemblies was laid by the Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama.

Whilst we all celebrate the creation of the new assemblies, the people of the Volta Region, are left out of the pomp and pageantry.

It is a sad day for the people in the Volta Region, especially the youth of the region, who had great expectations, when the NPP administration gave the signal of the intention to create new Assemblies.

At the time all other regions are in jubilant mood, following the birth of the new assemblies the story in the Volta Region, is one of wailing, crying and gnashing of teeth.

The deliberate decision by government not to give even a single new assembly to the Volta Region is an unfortunate development.

As far as the young people of the Volta Region, are concerned, this administration has again demonstrated their unpreparedness to bring development to the region.

The Youth Wing is of the view that the NPP is not genuinely committed to the decentralization process.

The very administration that claims that one of the single most important reasons for the decision to divide the Volta Region is to fast track the development of the yet to be created Oti Region, are not ready to give the Volta Region new districts, as has been done in the other regions.

We the young people of the Volta Region, are of the view that the NPP has missed the opportunity to show how genuine they are in the decision to split the region.

This posture by the NPP, is a clear manifestation of the government's double standard.

It is the belief of the Wing that just as the Former President John Mahama, promised during the electioneering campaign , the next NDC government in 2021, will put in place the needed constitutional processes to facilitate and split and to see to the acelerated development of the area.

God bless Volta Region
