NPP now party of 'madness' – Afoko

Suspended NPP chairman, Paul Afoko Suspended NPP chairman, Paul Afoko

Madness has enveloped and engulfed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suspended chairman Paul Afoko has said.

The party’s first-ever elected chairman of northern extraction told Maame Biamah Kwafo of UTV in an interview on Wednesday March 23 that the suspension spree that hit the party late last year underscored his assertion.

“Madness has invaded the party” Mr Afoko noted, adding that the suspension of founder-member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe was senseless.

“You have suspended him, and by extension you have suspended his vote and that of his entire family. He is just a member; he has not gone to the party’s headquarters to look for a job or for money. Does it make sense?” Mr Afoko wondered.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe has been an internal critic of his party’s leadership, a situation that led leaders such as late chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey to describe him as a loner who did not believe in the ideals of the NPP.

Mr Afoko, as well as General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, and second vice chairman Sammy Crabbe, were suspended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on grounds that they had breached various party rules. They were also accused by some party leaders and members of working against flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo’s presidential bid. Mr Afoko is, however, fighting his suspension in court. He insists he remains the substantive chairman of the party despite his suspension.
