National Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi insists the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is training 'machomen' and thugs only to "intimidate opponents of President Akufo-Addo".

The NDC says it has evidence that the NPP is training thugs at Asutuare to cause mayhem during the 2020 election.

"We remember what happened in Ayawaso West Wuogon. I pray that God forbid, nothing like that ever happens again. But you know the issue of vigilantes, especially one party is training vigilantes. I remember at the time of Ayawaso West Wuogon, there was a letter that came out asking party executives to bring able-bodied people to be trained as security. Since then, we have evidence that those people have been to Asutuare and trained in batches over and over again in all kinds of combat techniques and other things. It’s is a worry that Ayawaso West Wuogon will be repeated on a larger scale than it did,” flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama alleged.

The ruling party has however denied training thugs to disrupt election 2020.

Speaking to this issue during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show 'Kokrokoo', Sammy Gyamfi said a letter, signed by the Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. Simon Ansu Tengabo (Rtd) is enough proof that the NPP is indeed training thugs at Asutuare.

"They are being trained and the plan is to give them national security uniforms to hurt and cause harm like what happened during the Ayawaso by-election. The plan is to intimidate opponents of President Akufo-Addo, intimidate the NDC; beat our polling agents, observers, like Sam George was beaten; that is their plan . . . otherwise, why will the regional security liaison write such a letter," Sammy Gyamfi claimed.
