NPP short-changing Ghanaians – Adu Asare

Immediate-past Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency of Accra, Kojo Adu Asare has charged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Members of Parliament, of short-changing the electorate, with regard to the party’s refusal to participate in the vetting of ministerial nominees.

The NPP in a letter signed Friday 25th January, 2013, by National Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, responding to a call by the Ghana Bar Association on the party to rescind the decision, stated that even though their MPs will not be available to vet the nominees, they will however take part in debates on the floor of Parliament.

But Mr. Adu Asare insists the position taken by the opposition party and its MPs, amounts to unfair treatment, particularly to the electorate, who stood in long-winding queues for hours, to get the opportunity to vote them as their representatives in Parliament.

“If you boycott the vetting of the nominees, how can you debate bills that will be introduced to the House by the Leader of Government Business for instance, who will also be vetted by the committee?” Mr. Adu Asare wondered.

The former NDC MP was speaking on weekly news analysis programme, News File Saturday, on Joy FM and the Joy News channel on Multi TV.

He described the action by the NPP and its MPs as “unnecessary and totally irresponsible,” explaining that, ministers are to assist the President in the performance of his duties.

According to him, every policy that will be discussed on the floor of Parliament, will emanate from the initiates of the President.

But Communications Director for the NPP, Nana Akomea insists, “Our Interest is that it is legitimate and is in consonance with our interest.”

“Our protest is that, we don’t want to be directly involved with factors that support his [John Mahama] government, which we are opposing,” Nana Akomea stated.
