A ranking member of parliament’s education committee, Clement Apaak, has urged the government to provide clarity on the total number of tablets procured for Senior High School (SHS) students.

According to him, conflicting reports about the quantity of tablets are concerning, and he warned that the government could leave office with a substantial debt in the education sector.

Speaking at a press conference in parliament on August 22, 2024, Clement Apaak stated, “We are not against the distribution of tablets to SHS students. The NDC was implementing a similar policy. However, it is problematic when the government makes untrue claims, such as having procured and supplied 900,000 tablets, when that is not the case. Why is the government, through the ministry, failing to do what is necessary, even after being requested by the Speaker of Parliament?”

Apaak further expressed concerns that the current government is likely to leave behind a significant debt in the education sector, not only in relation to the tablets but also in terms of unpaid suppliers for goods such as school uniforms, stationery, and sports apparel.

“The government needs to be honest and sincere about what it has done and what it has not,” he emphasised.

The NPP flagbearer, during the launch of his manifesto, announced that 900,000 free student tablets had been distributed across the country.

These tablets, fully funded by the GETFund, are part of the government’s Smart School Project, which aims to digitise all sectors of the country.
