The Central Regional Minister, Mr. Isaac Edumadze, on Saturday stated that the government instituted the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) to unify, promote peace and reconcile the nation.
He observed that the testimonies emanating from the Commission so far, revealed how embittered and divided the country was.
Mr. Edumadze made these observations in a speech read for him at the Regional Congress of the Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) at Cape Coast on the theme " Building, promoting and consolidating peace and sustainable development- the role of the Ghana United Nations Association."
He expressed the hope that the Commission would live up to expectation to heal the wounds and reconcile the country adding that, the NRC was part of the measures government was pursuing to consolidate peace.
He mentioned some of the other measures as the equipping of the police service with the necessary logistics for effective maintenance of law and order and the computerisation of the courts to facilitate quick dispensation of justice.
Mr. Edumadze said most developed countries attained their present status through sustainable peace, which he said was the key to socio-economic development. He urged all Ghanaians to join forces in finding a lasting solution to the numerous chieftaincy and land disputes in the country, adding that peace could not be achieved on a silver platter.
The minister called on the citizenry to seek resolutions through peaceful, and constitutional means at all times. The Director of the World Federation of United Nations Africa, Dr. Mike Awuah Asamoah, who chaired the function said GUNA would bring together other international NGOs to promote health and education in the country and asked members of the association to join in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
