Accra, Aug. 7, GNA - The decision of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to take the government to court is to save the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) from abuse, Mr Edward Kofi Boamah, President of NUGS, told a press conference in Accra on Thursday. The press conference was organized to respond to a statement issued by the Minister of Information, Nana Akomea on Tuesday on lodgements into the GETfund.
Mr Boamah contradicted the Minister on the amounts lodged into the fund, the times the lodgements were made and disbursements from it. He also contradicted the Minister on the effective date of the GETFund and said the Act that established the Fund came into being in August 2000 and deduction commenced on September 1, 2000. On the payment of outstanding arrears, Mr Boamah said Parliament had not approved of a schedule for the payments and pledged NUGS' readiness to cooperate in every endeavour to reconcile discrepancies arising out of the management of the fund.
Turning to media reports about an attempted coup d'etat, Mr Boamah said: "NUGS condemns unambiguously the alleged coup plot and calls for an accelerated investigations into the issue. "We cherish democracy and will forever insist that the 'Thumb Be The Tool' for electing our political leaders."
