NUGS-Russia Organize Seminar

ON EMPOWERING TOMORROW'S DOCTORS

The desire to ensure security to the ordinary Ghanaian in terms of health lead to the organization of Health Seminar by the National Union of Ghana Students-Russia for Medical and Pharmacy Students, which took place at the Ghana Embassy in Moscow-Russia. It was attended by about fifty students and other participants including members of the Ghanaian Community in Russia.

The purpose of the programme was to prepare Medical Students for the challenges ahead and to encourage foreign trained Medical personnel in the Russian Federation to come back home and play their role and add impetus to the socio-economic development of Ghana.

The speaker, Dr. Samuel Asirifi Amoako, a Russian trained doctor, rich in practical experience both in Ghana and Abroad, a Senior Resident in obstetrics and Gynecology, and also conducting research into Post partum hemorrhage in Ghanaian Women in the Volgograd State Medical University led the students through the Seminar. His practical illustration and erudite presentation was well received by, diplomats of Ghana Mission to Russia (Mr. Abdul-Baasit Inusah, 1st Secretary, Consular and Education, and Mr. Ludwig Mawuwoe Adagbe, Second Secretary/Finance & Accounts) and non-Medical Students, who attended the programme feeling part of the Medical Profession. Dr Yusuf Ojoola, a Nigerian Medical doctor was also invited to grace the occasion.

Typical diseases like malaria, fever, sickle cell, HIV/AIDS, etc, which are rare here, but common to our country, our continent were discussed. The final year Medical students were also taught the code of ethics of the Medical Profession, Doctor-Patient Relationship, the Ghana Medical and Dental Board Examination, etc.

Some past students (Dr. Samuel Asare Bediako and Dr. Edward Sutherland) via email shared their experiences and offered counseling on how to prepare and pass the exams. This, NUGS-Russia beliefs will help ease the difficulties students face with the board examinations.

The atmosphere was, once again lively when Jonathan Coomson, a final year Medical Student took turn to the platform for his presentation on the topic Typhoid Fever. His well organized presentation shows there is a brighter future for Ghana, as far as capacity building of her doctors is concerned.

At the end of the Seminar, it was all thanksgiving from the students for a successful programme and for the fact that, they have absorbed a lot from the speakers, which has boosted their level of confidence to become qualified and skilled personnel.

The Health Seminar is part of the series of programmes, designed by NUGS-Russia to empower the Youth in ensuring National Development.
