Accra, Jan. 12 GNA - The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) can now boast of a permanent office accommodation as their secretariat after being ejected from the premises of the Civil Servants Association in Accra about four months ago.
The Executives of NUGS, who by then had had all their belongings packed out of the building close to the Ministries taxi rank, staged a hunger strike to appeal to the public to come to its aid. The Osu Traditional Council subsequently fulfilled its promise to the students when Nii Ako Nortei IV, Osu Manklalo on Thursday presented documents covering a building located at the Ridge area near the HFC Bank to the union in Accra.
The lease is subject renewal after 10 years.
Nii Ako Nortei explained while in the US he was touched by the plight of the students when he heard about their problems and ordered that a place be found for them.
"I made a call to Ghana to immediately stop the hunger strike by the students. We all know the role that student leaders have played in the country's struggle for independence and that of the GETfund, which the whole nation is enjoying."
Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, NUGS President, who received the documents on behalf of the Executives, thanked the Osu Traditional council for their gesture saying, this would go down in the annals of history as the greatest donation ever made to the Union. 12 Jan. 06
