NUGS kicks against tax on water

Accra, Nov 7, GNA - The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Monday said they disagreed with the Finance Ministry's proposal to impose Value Added Tax on sachet water that is currently before Parliament.

The Union said since sachet water was the only source of convenient drinking water for the poor, students, and majority of Ghanaians, the tax would serve as an attack on the life and survival of Ghanaians. A statement signed by Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, NUGS President said the situation might force Ghanaians to create cheaper, yet unsafe alternatives with associated health hazards, "especially at this time of cholera outbreak in the country."

NUGS therefore called on the Ministry of Finance, Parliament and other civil society organisations to help withdraw the proposal to prevent it from becoming a law.

The Union assured all students that it would do all it could to ensure that the proposal was withdrawn.
