Nana Addo's promise to 'kayayei' "most insulting" - Mahama

President John Mahama has described as insulting, a promise by main opposition flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo to provide free temporary housing for vulnerable girl head porters.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the promise when he met real estate developers about two weeks ago.

However, speaking to party supporters in Savelugu in the Northern region, President Mahama stated that that Nana Addo’s promise to the head porters popularly known as ‘kayayei’ is borne out of desperation.

“Because you are desperate to win, you are promising free everything, I will give free healthcare to children under 18 which is being implemented already.

“Then he says we will provide free hostel to Kayayei; that is the most insulting one, so our girls should remain and continue to carry people’s goods” President Mahama said.

President Mahama added that Nana Addo should rather provide the kayayei with skilled programmes that would enable them do good business which would prevent from engaging in the kayayei business.

“If you want to solve the issue of Kayayei then you would do what NDC is doing, we are going to the south and registering our little sisters who are kayayei and putting them in training, we are teaching them how to be dress makers, hairdressers and giving them other equipment so that they will come back and work for themselves”.
