Nation Assured of Free and Fair Elections Next Year

The Minister for Information, Hon. Nana Akomea, has emphasized government’s commitment to a freer, kinder and more liberal environment, adding that the government would conduct itself in a manner that would ensure free and fair elections next year.

Nana Akomea has assured Ghanaians that government would do its best to bring everybody into the mainstream of administration in spite of party affiliations and castigations from opponents.

The Minister was addressing the media in Accra today at the “Weekly Press Briefing”at the Ministry of Information Conference Hall in reaction to some allegations reported to have been made by a delegation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during their recent visit to Nigeria that the NDC members were being prosecuted by President Kufuor’s government and to petition President Obasanjo for intervention.

The Information Minister recounted the NPP government’s support to members of the former government in various positions such as ECOWAS Executive Secretary and Chief Executive of Commonwealth Telecom Union in the persons of Dr. Ibn Chambas and Dr.Ekwow Spio-Garbrah respectively.

Hon. Akomea pointed out that the seat of government in the country today is friendlier than ever before. He said that the media have been given the needed environment to operate as per the quashing of the Criminal Libel Law, the yet to be enacted Right of Information Bill, and the general feeling of majority of Ghanaians that the weight of oppression, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and bravado of government have been lifted by President Kufuor’s government. He added that records are there for the people of Ghana and the world at large to compare this government and that of the previous regime.

Mr Andew Awuni, Deputy Minister for Information, who was also present at the briefing , remarked that Ghanaians are very decent and intelligent people and would ,therefore, not be taken in by any falsehood deliberately propagated by some people.
