National Health Insurance Authority to register prisoners

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has pledged its commitment to ensure that the victims of the June 3rd flood disaster who have lost their NHIS cards get them replaced.

The NHIA will also start a process to register prison inmates unto the scheme.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Mr. Nathaniel Otoo pledged the authority’s commitment when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender children and Social Protection on Wednesday.

Mr. Nathaniel Otoo revealed that the NHIA has achieved more in recent years due to the strong collaboration between them and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

He noted that about 100% of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) beneficiaries have been registered unto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr. Otoo further revealed that the NHIS has registered about 75% of the 8.2 % of the poor and vulnerable people in the country and poised to register 100% of the population.

Nana Oye Lithur expressed her Ministry’s appreciation to the NHIA for the continuous support in providing social services to the Ghanaian populace.

She intimated that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between her Ministry and the NHIA in 2010 is well on course. As part of the MoU, both partners were to ensure that all beneficiaries of the LEAP are automatically registered on the NHIS, this the Minister noted has been achieved.

Nana Oye Lithur hinted that an approximately 6,500 elderly persons are now registered unto the NHIS and the process is ongoing to ensure that all elderly persons are registered.

Mrs. Lithur thanked him for his prompt response to her request for the replacement of NHIS cards for the June 3rd disaster victims as well as registration of the prison inmates.
